Question Currents in the St. Lawrence River

I am a Canadian Yachting Association instructor in Western Canada. The new CYA Coastal Navigation exam has a question on the calculation of secondary current stations in the St. Lawrence. I am looking for instructions for this. Do you have any suggestions? I have ordered chart 1233. I also have looked at the Canadian Hydrographic Service current tables for the region.

I have a notion about how to do the calculations, but I do need to know the exact, proper method.

Thanks

Jack

Hi Jack

Can you PM me the exact wording of the question? I work for DFO (Coast Guard) and can get clarification for you direct from the source (CHS).

Here's the response from CHS that Jack asked for.

These tidal Stream Currents Table provide the information about the tidal stream at specific locations indicated by the letter in a lozenge on the chart.

The left part is referred to the reference port of Québec and the right side to Pointe-au-Père. THe information about the tides are available frot the Canadian Tide and Currents Tables.

For each tidal stream stations, the table provides the direction of the current is provided in direction (degree) and velocity (kn : knots) at hourly intervals calculated from the High Water (HW) time taken from the Tide Tables.

The intervals start at 6 hours before the High Water (-6) until 6 hours after the High Water (+6).

There is a Tidal Current Atlas for the St. Lawrence Estuary that provides more detailed information.

The currents are depicted with coloured arrows for 20 minutes intervals.

If you need more information consult our tidal Web Site www.tides.gc.ca or I could refer you to our tidal Section.

Heh!

And here I was hoping for an opportunity to check my 1908 US HO pilot: #100 The Gulf and River St. Lawrence. Someday I'm going to get to sail out there and see if any of this old sailing ship information is any good...
