Current / Wind Vocabulary

Okay, let's talk vocabulary.

I'm interested in citations. I did a cursory search, but with my Google skills, I can't find my last name.

A wind that blows from north to south is a northerly wind.

A current that flows from north to south is a southerly current.

Can anyone provide citations for these statements?

Re: Current / Wind Vocabulary

It's commonly accepted terminology. I don't know where you would find a citation.

Re: Current / Wind Vocabulary

I believe it originates with how each event was observed.

So for wind, it would be the weathervane, where the arrow points into the wind and you read the (approximate) direction from the rudimentary compass arms.

For current, the reference is the direction it carries a ship that is in it.

However, I do not have a citation for either (but the weathervane might not be too hard to find, but I didn't look).
