Re: Cruising Guide to the East Coast

If the boat does not take water, the mast is up and sail can make you gain speed, ruder ok, you could really sail it down.
You will be along the cost for the whole trip, so you can easily monitor weather and seek refuge in harbor when a cold front goes by.
if you are confortable with a night off shore, the first leg would be: Brooklin to Portland, then Provincetown. Then, go via Cap Cod canal, planning to travel the canal with the tide in your direction. Then, coastal via Long Island sound, and East River. Then out Verrazano, and follow previous advice.

Active Captain is fine. If you prefer something in hardcopy (which I do, sometimes), I really like the Skipper Bob publications, and Bluewater Books and Charts is a great place to do business with (nice people, too, if you are ever in the Ft Lauderdale area).

Re: Cruising Guide to the East Coast

The USCG link is good with some provisos: not all that easy to use, and updating can be timeconsuming.

A good start is the map:

NOAA Nautical Chart Catalog

Note that Florida appears in two regions. Here's the Mid Atlantic:

Eastern U.S. - NOAA Nautical Chart Catalog

On this page, download the pdf catalog for the region, and you will see all the individual charts. The green and red will be of the most interest, with the blue charts in a larger scale. Note: these are all raster charts.

You can then download just the charts you really need. Nice, but simple? Not. As for me, I highly suggest you download "openCPN", a free, open source chartplotting program. More and more people like this program, including me, because you can download a great number of charts, both ENC and RNC, all of which this program will update - all of them - with a single click. Usage is cool too as all of the available charts for the area you are in - from small to large scale - are linked on the bottom of your screen and you can change charts, again with single click.

Last, you can use it offline. Awesome, and if nothing else makes access, use and update of the USCG charts really fast and easy.
