here's another question... going around the southern tip of florida; is it possible to stay between shore and the gulf stream or am i going to have to cross the stream to the bahamas and back again to get to the keys?

How tall is your rig (Bridge Clearence) You could avoid all that around the tip of florida and go via Lake Okeechobbe. Save you a few days, too. But you can't be taller than about 54ft. and you can't draw more than about 6 ft. Check with the corps of engineers to see how deep the lake/canal is.
