Re: Computer navigation and tablet advice for idiot please!

Hi Copacobana. I've just got a HUAWEI MediaPad M3 Lite 10 to use on the boat for navigation and email and web-browsing. I'm very impressed (amazed even) with its battery life compared with a laptop. It has GPS - and I use an Android navigation app: Marine Navigator. It can accept charts from many sources.
I'm typing this on the tablet, now.
Total cost for the tablet, the app and the chartset was about 230 UK pounds.

As far as I know, most have GPS, with or without cellular. I've never seen one without GPS, although that doesn't mean they don't exist...

I also use a Samsung tablet as backup to the ships navigation equipment, and more frequently with my black box Vesper AIS. Very happy and WAY WAY cheaper than an IPAD. Couple of hundred bucks at COSTCO.

Bite the bullet. Buy an IPad. Apple technology will continue to dominate. You will end up spending more time and money fighting it. If you enjoy spending a lot of your time learning & dealing with technology, then more power to you.
Although not perfectly apropos; we had a saying in the computer biz:
You can always tell the pioneers by the arrows in their backs.

Re: Computer navigation and tablet advice for idiot please!

I use OpenCPN with an HP 10t-p000 (which is a Windows 10 tablet with a detachable keyboard) and additional 64gig SD. For GPS I have a GlobalSat BU-353-S4 USB GPS. It is very reliable. No the screen in not easy to read in bright sun, so I made a hood out of plastic. I've used OpenCPN and the GlobalSat GPS dongle successfully with several Notebook PCs over 8 years. I recently added a dAISy receiver which adds AIS to OpenCPN.

Re: Computer navigation and tablet advice for idiot please!

I have 2 Samsung tablets. Tablets are so cheap that I have 1 as a Secondary/backup.
I run Navionics because they are so pro-active about updating charts with up to date reportings.
I recently used this navigation setup to sail from New England to Florida keys and then to Cuba. Never let me down.
If you go the tablet route, buy a waterproof plastic enclosure so you can keep it outside by the wheel. Inside that plastic enclosure I have my Samsung tablet and a battery backup already plugged into the Samsung. I can get about 18 hours of navigating out of that rig. After 18 hours, I grab my Secondary tablet and plug the Primary tablet and battery in for charging.
At the end of the trip, just put the tablet into your luggage and play/plan with it at home.
It also takes great pics to document the cruise.

Re: Computer navigation and tablet advice for idiot please!

I have used my I Pad with I Navix as my secondary source of navigation. My primary source are paper charts. The I Pad is so good with I Navix that it has passed my Garmin Chart Plotter in the line of dependency and use. I to have and secure my I Pad with a Ram Mount. So far, so good.

Re: Computer navigation and tablet advice for idiot please!

I didn’t read anything in the above discussions pertaining to being able to “see” the navigation information on whatever device you seek advise for in daylight. IMHO, that is the most important consideration for navigation which my Ipad Pro clearly performs very well.

Re: Computer navigation and tablet advice for idiot please!

For a backup navigation option (aside from paper and visual nav) I have an android ASUS Zen Pad tablet. With built in GPS and Navionics Boating HD it is equal to our Raymarine c80 chartplotter in quality albeit with a smaller screen. It has come in very handy especially around the heavily shoaled rocky formations and islands of the North Channel in northern Lake Huron.

Re: Computer navigation and tablet advice for idiot please!

Re Navioncs on iPad

We are in Fiji and came across some US cruisers and all they had was Navionics on ipads.
We have
C-Map on our Furuno networked plotter system, nav station and cockpit
C-Map on Maxsea TZ on the laptop
OpenCPN with GE2KAP on the laptop
Samsung tablet in the cockpit as a wireless repeater for the laptop
Navionics on B&G Vulcan plotter in the cockpit

Having looked at the Navionics on the iPads and our B&G plotter and seen the reality in Western Fiji, Navionics is downright dangerous. Its shows reefs where there are none, doesn't show reefs where they are and has no detail for some important channels.
C-Map on the other hand is generally very good when compared to the satellite photos from GE2KAP and the paper charts.
So while Navionics might be good in some parts of the world, it certainly isn't here !
