which is the best and most economical way of keeping up with e mail, weather and navigational apps?

Local SIm card, mobile phone and a data plan. Good GSM cover on those coasts to about 30 miles off.

These POI's of the Eastern Med are very useful.
Just import them into your OCPN Route Manager in the 'layers' section.
Or,go direct to the Goggle Earth .kml file.

I don't know if you are familiar with the excellent,FREE nav prog called OpenCPN?
If not,I would strongly recommend you download it from opencpn.org

There is a growing library of 'POI' (places of interest) (.gpx) files available for OpenCPN,
especially for the Eastern Med and Aegian Sea.

The POI files can be created and edited to your choice using OpenCPN and the FREE CE2GPXKML conversion program.
