Cheapa Charts

It seems to me that the most practicable navigation system would be one that combined paper and electronic charts.
So could one scan a chart onto a disk in a form that could be used by a navigational program?
If so how would one do it and what program should one use?

perfectly possible to do this and SeaClear provide (for free) the tools to do it, and a plotter to use them. You still end up with vector charts rather than raster, but it does work.

I have a scanner that allows you to scan a chart in sections then use the software with it to weave all the parts back together so you have the complete chart. Then I use Fugawi to read in the scanned map and calibrate it. The key is to calibarate it accurately. You do end up with a raster chart.

once you get out there cruising somebody will 'give' you a copy of the Russian version of world wide C-Map. once it is in the computer and linked to the GPS you have world wide charts.. When I was in Indonesia I 'ran out' of paper copies of the area so spent some time 'screen printing' enough charts on A4 to get me out of trouble if the lap top died... Most plotters seem not to have the entire world available... Not sure why.

I have the c map you mention but would like to print from it, can't find a way to do it, anyone help????

The only way I found was to use Prt Scrn PRINT SCREEN on the computer- always worked fine for me.

I've used Ozie Explorer. They bring in Raster charts and are the very best
and clearest platform I've ever seen. Lots of unusual features. I think that it requires some time to master using it.They are compatable with most raster formats. A solid user group. Its worth a look. I'm surprised they aren't more well known. Just google them on the web.

i must agree i have searched the net as well and installed that and found it very good and free
