Thanks guys for all your help! MAN! Where did ya'll dig up those old charts? Pre-WW2 but it had what I needed to see! Noticed that the island is actually called Samur not Samung. Mr. Werner and I will have to discuss that.
Re: Ownership; the property is owned by a corporation and we're buying the controlling interest, i.e. ALL the shares. LOL! But actually you can own property in the Phils IF you take citizenship. Or set up a shell Corporation.

We have decided to begin planning a place for cruisers to come and have a place to moor and enjoy the beach and the surrounding waters. We plan to place several mooring balls, a "Palapa" on the beach with BBQ pit and such, a well is already in place that we'll make available. Maybe even enough hose to fill the tanks or the use of our T-head to fill up. Nothing big or fancy, just a place for a few at a time to hang out. We still want to keep our privacy. IF we decide to continue with the purchase.

I wouldn't worry too much about the name of the island on the chart. It's probably just a phonetic spelling of what it is in tagalog or the local dialect. Samung is probably what it is known as now.

Subic Bay for example used to be called Subig prior to the US NAval base being there, and the islands around Puerto Galera (or Port Galera on the old charts) were called something completely different to what they are known as now.

This is common all round Asia where a country has a lot of European influence. Everything becomes anglicised. "Ven Gen" becomes Vientienne with a French accent. "Heung Gong" become Hong Kong with a British accent.

Fisherman TX,
The charts Sinbad7 found for you look good.
If you are still interested, I have some raster charts of the Philippines that vary in quality, but found them useful when used in tandem with cmap, which is often a mile out in the Philippines. The raster charts run fine on OpenCPN. PM me if interested.

I wish you all the best if you move to the PI.... I've just sold up and left.

As for buying a house - I personally would not. Renting is a far better and more flexible option. Why ? Basically it is easy getting money into the PI - but can be difficult getting it back out.

PG Yacht club is in a great location, but when an Ipo-Ipo (Typhoon) comes along, I'd get nervous. There are also yacht clubs in Manila Bay - and up at Subic (where there is a 10-15T lift).

Good luck

Thx , guys! the old charts Bewitched came up with did the trick, for now. Thx Sinbad7 for the links. We'll check into that when it comes time to work/sail it. Jim, We'll keep you in mind, thx for the offer. DeepStar, we're buying the company that owns Samur/Samung Island (MAYBE). We'll be building our homes along with the power plant (wind/solar). Also, setting up a small cruisers haven in case folks want to drop in or hide from the weather (see post #16).

Thx All!

Here's a plat of the island.....

Re: Charts for the Phillipines

Me too! We're very excited! Our investment is due to roll out shortly and of course the owner is chomping at the bit to get it sold. Any word on John's (imagine2frolic) cancer treatments?

Re: Charts for the Phillipines

"we're buying the company that owns Samur/Samung Island (MAYBE)" - I have been living in the PI for five years now. Ownership of land by non-citizens is a complicated proposition - I have read many posts about this on a Yahoo Group: LivingInThePhilippines3
You might want to review some of the posts on land ownership here and/or post a question on your proposed acquisition. Good luck.
