Thats a good question and I just went out to try it. Nope, can't seem to find anywhere to turn off the Active Captain stuff. However, the icons are done very well and they scale as you zoom in and out, and disappear once you zoom far enough out. They really don't get in the way at all and most of the time you are zoomed out far enough for them not to show up.

I also love Active Captain data.... but... We find that peoples opinions and the environment vary so much that some of the data is not useful. i.e. Half the review will say a place is excellent, and half will say it sucks. We have learned to glean some data from them (like prices of marinas and balls), but we don't rely solely on the reviews anymore.
