Charleston to Fernandina Outside

Planning transit for end of February. Will leave Charleston 0800 and arrive at St Mary's approach buoy approx 25 hrs later. Will have a couple of inexperienced sailors with us so we have the North Edisto River as a bail out point on the first day if needed. We will leave Charleston on a flood tide in order to make St Mary's inlet on a flood. Any comments from those that have made this transit before?

Did it in reverse last April. Quite a few cruisers were heading north so we had some company. Nothing really to note other than the traffic in and out of Savannah. We passed Savannah at night with no AIS and it was fine.

Same here - have done it in reverse. Other than subs, nothing to fear.

Pick your weather

Pick your weather and off you go. We had no problem except we could have used a little more wind. We had a good trip and would do it again.

Be watchful of shallows north of FB. Don't cut in too close to Cumberland Island and Jekyll especially. Lots of skinny water and sand bars off those islands. I recommend coming in the St. Mary's entrance at R2 or R 4 for a straight in approach. Oh yeah, don't be surprised by the navy gun boats if a sub is near by.
