Channel Islands to the Azores

Any advice on sailing from the Channel Islands to the Azores in November? We would then go to Bermuda and then on to the BVI? Thanks so much for your input!

Re: Channel Islands to the Azores

You might want to look at the pilot charts for the North Atlantic including Gulf of Mexico for November.

Check the La Rochelle thread in this section. Bay of Biscay not recommended in November.

Re: Channel Islands to the Azores

by mid november your north atlantic lows are passing roughly every 3 days with winds in excess of 60 knots, not a part of the ocean to be in in anything under 200ft.....

And, being a Californian, I thought you meant the Channel Islands SW of Santa Barbara and West of Los Angles!

Re: Channel Islands to the Azores

Depends on the strength of the boat and her crew.

Make sure you have what it takes.

If I were to guess from your question, you do not.

Re: Channel Islands to the Azores

I think your plan to go to Bermuda, and then the BVIs might be better reversed. In fact if you plan for the center of the Caribbean Islands, then you can decide how far north or south on the chain you want to go. If you arrive in the BVIs you will have to bash to windward to get to the rest of the chain. Antigua makes a good starting point, and is a wonderful historical landfall for sailors. What type of boat do you have, and what is the number and experience of your crew? Are you planning on going back to Europe in the spring? _________Grant.
