Channel by Key West airport

I was looking at google earth and there appears to be a channel that runs almost to the beach by the key west airport. I don't see it on my charts. Anybody know what kind of depth is in there? Was thinking about going in there with my boat to pick up somebody. Thanks!

Re: Channel by Key West airport

You want to pick up an airline passenger off the beach in your boat?
It sounds like fun, but I have to wonder how the Homeland Security people will like that? Don't get shot lol.

Re: Channel by Key West airport

There is a seawall along the south west side of Key West. It was the home of Houseboat Row, before the City moved them into a marine.

It is across the street from the airport.

There are a few boats anchored in the area and they dinghy to the wall but I'm not sure of the depths there.

A small boat or dinghy should be able to land for a pick up.

Yes, I was taking the dink in but it looks like there is a channel that runs up to about 100 feet from shore. If you start from the pier and head east it's about 1.72 miles.

I've flown in there a few times, and if your talking about where I think you are, it looks shallow from the air, I can see bottom very clearly.

That is the South side right, if memory serves runway runs east / west. There is a channel right off of the East end of the runway and two on the South side. I wouldn't try any of them in my boat, dinghy sure, I can drag it off from being grounded

If you get OpenCPN and the BSB charts, you can see that channel. Its very narrow with some shallow (4ft) stuff right at the mouth to either side. In theory, if you go right up the mouth its 14ft dropping to 8 as you near shore.

Personally I wouldn't go anywhere near it with my boat. That side of Key West offers little protection if the wind is out of the south or east and it would be real easy to get pushed into the shallows.

I'll only be in there for a short time. I'll linger offshore until my GF lands and go in once she's onshore waiting.

Didn't get a chance to look, big T storms rolled thru.

Had to get back to Boot Key and the boat.
