Cell phone reception off coast of California?

I'm looking to sail from San Francisco to San Diego in a couple weeks and was wondering how the cell phone reception is off the cost? If there is reception, how far off the coast were you?

Thanks!

When you get replies, keep in mind that the range and coverage will vary for 2G 3G and 4G systems, and also varies for the different service providers.

Did that trip in August. Got voice at about 15-17 nm and 3G data at about 10nm. Did not see much 4G except in harbors. Had both Verizon and AT&T, not much difference.

Between SF and Santa Cruz there are several spots of poor reception, just a few miles out. Sail a few miles and it comes back again. Poor reception between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay, and Pigeon Pt to Davenport.

I just did the trip and am now in Chula Vista. I have Verizon and as long as i was within 4 miles had coverage 80% of the time. My Crew member had 4G ATT and was shopping all the way down...
