Celestial navigation books?

Does anyone know a good book to help self teach celestial navigation? I plan to take a course in the future but I usually learn best on my own by reading.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: Celestial navigation books?

I self taught while underway from Mary Blewitt's book. Some say it's a bit outdated and there's some other similar book out that other's liked better but I thought Blewitt was perfect. Very good step by step if that's all you want but includes enough math and theory to be interesting if you like.

Here's a link to an online free book that reference's Blewitt as one of the sources.

Re: Celestial navigation books?

I just forgot to mention earlier, in Mary Blewitt's book you do not have "moon sight" so if you also wish to learn how to do moon sight buy another book.

That’s a little over the top.

Re: Celestial navigation books?

Another well laid out and easy to follow book.

You can either learn from the book or sign up for the online course ( Starpath Celestial Online Home Study Course ) if you feel the need for a bit of help.

You can get the book only at Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Celestial-Nav.../dp/0914025465

in mine (german translation of her 1971-edition) there is (p52)

& btw: in the book there is everything you might ever need in the ways of celestial nav. - fancy stuff like “time by lunar distance“ could be found in Letcher jr.
& never to forget: practice is what counts, practice, practice, practice...
starsights when its rough, in moonlit nights,...(& not solving the spherical triangle “on foot“ using logarithmic tables) - at least this was what got us twice rtw pre- gps & sans satnav & through quite challenging areas (Bismarck archipelago, ....)

Re: Celestial navigation books?

I used "Sun Sight Sailing" by S.L. Seaton to begin taking shots. Once I could reduce shots without really understanding what was going on (step 1), I went to Bowditch and learned a lot more. It was in Bowditch that I first understood what was going on with all those numbers and lines, and understanding, for me, is the key to troubleshooting.
But it was key to be able to get shots reduced, and be doing it, while I was studying Bowditch--somehow the two together got me over the hump.
Couldn't stand Blewitt. Completely not geared toward people of small intellect like myself.

in mine, 2015 edition does not have.
and to be honest i do not know why it is "bestseller", nothing special. books by Tom Cunliffe are much better.

this is what is on page 52....

Re: Celestial navigation books?

I liked MB because it contained everything needed, but absolutely nothing superfluous. Any other book on this subject I looked into was more voluminous, more longwinded, with more "explanations", etc.
I didn't (& still don't) want to know the "why", just the "how".
Hard to imagine another book on this subject could be more "concise"
(& of course "page 52" of my kraut-version would not correspond to page 52 of the "rosbif" version...)
