Caribbean paper charts

Hi to all,
We are looking for paper charts in good condition to cover from Puerto Rico all the way to Grenada.

Thanks,
Pam

Re: Caribbean paper charts

Hi, Pam.

Do you have a chart plotter? If so, you might consider not buying (expensive) paper charts.

With the chart plotter and the excellent sketch charts in the available cruising guides, paper charts are redundant, at least in my experience. We spent two years cruising from the Spanish Virgins to Grenada and back several times, and didn't use paper charts at all.

I know that some folks believe that paper charts are essential, but I didn't find that to be the case in this particular cruising area.

Re: Caribbean paper charts

Hi Hud,

We do have a chartplotter but I am from the old school of not depending on electronics completely. I will consider using just the chartplotter though.

Re: Caribbean paper charts

Actually, the sketch charts in the cruising guides are what we relied on the most. They're better than the paper charts, too, as they highlight sailing routes and potential difficulties. For us, the chartplotter was secondary, mainly for routing between the islands.

Re: Caribbean paper charts

We have and we use NV charts (both paper and digital)

Have a look at NV's - you may like them too. Come in small size folios and are not darn expensive.

Re: Caribbean paper charts

We are selling our NV portfolios for that area - very cheap. However, we are in Guatemala and I am not willing to figure out how to ship them out of here. Unfortunately, no one here wants them so we will most likely throw them away.

But the NV and Iolaire are the best charts of the area.
