Cape May Channel

I’ve never taken the “shortcut” from the Cape May inlet to the river. Has always got Crm me pause when I look at the chart as it’s all sandy shoals and I figured the charts are wrong. I see R4 and G5 but there is no obvious channel and there are jumps and shallows all the way through.

Can anyone reassure me that it’s ok and offer any advice?

I tried to go through there a few years ago but between my depth sounder and seeing the bottom I chickened out and took the long way around. Would like to save an hour or two this time around.

Cape May Channel

Thought it was fine. Drawing 5 ft and air draft of 51 ft, and used active captain along with charts. Did fine, saved a bunch of time and nice anchorage of the Coast Guard training area.

Re: Cape May Channel

Just to be clear I’m referring to the channel along the coast, not the canal from the river to Cape May. My mast is too tall for the bridge.

I went around the cape a few years ago with a 6’ 4” draft. No problems. The deep water runs pretty close to the beach at one point.

I would do it again.
