BVI to South Florida

I am a fairly seasoned lake sailor and have purchased a boat in the tortula 's
I was wondering the best books on this process and any good advice for this trip .
I have considered hiring a delivery Capt to go with us [crew of 2 others ]
This forum has been great
thanks

Re: BVI TO SOUTH FLORIDA

I've done it the other way. Depends a lot on how much time you want to spend. There is quite a lot to see on the way if you have time. At least you'll be traveling with the wind, not against it as you would from Florida to Tortola.

I suggest you add something about how much time and how much you want to see. You've got Puerto Rico, the Dominican, the Turks and Caicos, and the Bahamas, at least. Also what kind of boat and who might be going with you. Who is going? You could also find one or two experienced (or inexperienced) crew on here who might be a big help.

Re: BVI TO SOUTH FLORIDA

I'll start here. This is a link to Frank Virgintino's Free Guides. Free Cruising Guides

He recommended the South coast of the DR when we came down a few years ago. We didn't heed his recommendations for some good reasons but I think I'd try the south coast. You really should have Van Sant's Gentleman's Guide. It was written for the Thorny Passage (the reverse direction from yours) where you are constantly pushing into the Trades but he has a lot of good information. If you go through the Bahamas you'll want the Explorer chartbooks. They include charts and lots of very useful information. It is generally agreed that they have the most accurate charts. I'll look through my guides later and post a few more.

Also you'll want to read information on noonsite. They usually have a lot of good stuff about local laws, customs and some sailing hints.

Re: BVI to South Florida

W bought our boat in st. Thomas and ended up coming up through PR, DR, and Bahamas. It's definitely worth taking your time if you can. We blogged along the way so you can find information about some of the places we went (and many of the same places you will be going if you take that route) here: http://TwoAndAHalfSailors.com
