He recommended the South coast of the DR when we came down a few years ago. We didn't heed his recommendations for some good reasons but I think I'd try the south coast. You really should have Van Sant's Gentleman's Guide. It was written for the Thorny Passage
(the reverse direction from yours) where you are constantly pushing into the Trades but he has a lot of good information. If you go through the Bahamas
you'll want the Explorer chartbooks. They include charts
and lots of very useful information. It is generally agreed that they have the most accurate charts
. I'll look through my guides later and post a few more.
Also you'll want to read information on noonsite. They usually have a lot of good stuff about local laws, customs
and some sailing hints.
