Buffalo, NY to St. Thomas, USVI

Trey and I are currently planning to sail on a 28' monohull from Buffalo to the Virgin Islands this coming May. This will be a cruising trip but the end result will be a delivery. Our main goal is to stop in Virginia as a halfway point. We'd like to stay out of ICW and anchor as often as possible. Have you any advice or tips? Chart references, port knowledge, hidden reefs or other pointers would be helpful and appreciated.

Thanks,
Jen

Re: Buffalo, NY to St. Thomas, USVI

Think about this as two trips - a summer trip from Buffalo to Virginia and a late fall trip from Virginia to the USVI, after the main risk of hurricane season is over. You certainly don't want to make it a continuous trip because you would be going from VA to USVI as the hurricane season peaks. The result is you would need to find a secure spot in Virginia to keep your boat until the beginning of November since hurricanes are also a possibility there. Check with your insurance company about named storms/location coverage. From Virginia you have two choices to the Virgin Islands - offshore or down the coast to Florida/Bahamas and then eastward. You don't describe the type of boat or your experience but both can be just fine or quite nasty. The latter route, called the Thorny Path (message there) is generally safer since you are not really offshore for any length of time and there are lots of places to bail out, but is much slower since you are going further and need to wait for narrow weather windows to make progress to windward against the trades.

Still looking for our next boat. Have decided we want to have something that will keep us happy for the next 10 years or so. By then I will be pushing 80 and if i am still sailing that will be a very good thing.
