Boston to New York Inland

Is there a way of going from Boston to New York using inland canals ? We plan on buying a boat in the Boston area and bring it up on Lake Champlain. I know the way from New York to Lake Champlain but not from Boston to New York. The reason we want to do it that is we don't have any ocean sailing experience. Anywhere on the web we can find that kind of informations?

Thanks to all!

Re: Boston to New York inland

No inland canals, but it's not a blue water passage. Sail from Boston south to the Cape Cod Canal, then West along the New England coast all the way into New York Harbor. Many places to stop along the way. You'll enjoy the journey if you take your time and wait for the right weather, tides, visibility, etc. Especially with a new boat!

You'll want to read about the ins and outs of each leg:
- Massachusetts Bay - nasty in a strong northerly
- Cape Cod Canal - tides
- East River - tides, rules of the road, radio procedures
- Etc

Have fun! - Colin

Re: Boston to New York inland

Maritime History note: until 1889 late you couldn't travel the coast of New England by railroad (let alone canal)! The Thames River was too deep for rail bridges to cross at New London, so west-bound passengers unloaded in Newport or Stonington to travel by steamship down Long Island Sound to New York. A railroad bridge was finally built across the Thames River in 1889.
