Re: Best route from BVI to florida
Hello, Isola Bianca II.
A lot depends on how you plan to make the passage. All in one go, 24/7, or island-hopping. If island-hopping, are you looking for enjoyable spots to spend some time, or will you simply be seeking a safe anchorage for the night? With a little more information on your intentions, I'm sure you'll get a lot of good, first-hand advice here.

Re: Best route from BVI to florida
If you want to break up the trip in very easy hops there are many places to stop. From BVI first stops north coast of Puerto Rico. Crossing the Mona Passage between PR and the Domincan Republic is sometimes rough so you could stop on the west end of PR to wait for a calm day to cross. Then a stop or two in the DR. I used to stop also in Haiti but considering the current economic and political situation I would check out the situation carefully before going there.
Next stop the Turks and Caicos Island. I like the island of Provodentiales. Several good spots to anchor. From there just island hopping but your draft may limit some stops. As long as you are under 6' then: through the Bahamas: Clarencetown Long Island, Georgetown Exumas, up the Exumas chain of islands. You can stop in Nassau for some city life. Then cross the backs to Bimini and cross the Gulf Stream to south Florida.

Yup I agree with Skipmac. I have 6 foot and as long as the three year olds don't get in your vision you can carefully pick through

Re: Best Route From BVI to Florida
Most cruisers headed that way depart the Virgin Islands roughly around the first half of May. The idea is to go late enough in the season to avoid the springtime cold fronts in the Bahamas and early enough to avoid the possibility of tropical storms.

Please allow me to translate the American slang for you.
His boat has 6' draft (that is a little less than 2 Meters in Italian ) and as long as the bambinos do not stand in front of the captain to block his vision he can safely navigate the shallow waters of the Bahamas by sight as you can easily see the shallow places in the clear water.

Interesting. In all the blogs I have read this winter I have noticed that November seemed to be the month that everyone was making the crossing. I was assuming this was to 'miss out' on hurricane season. Hmmmmm. I will have to keep May in mind as well.

Re: Best Route From BVI to Florida
November is the time to leave the States for the islands. If you're in the islands, May is the preferred month to head back to the States.

10-4...thanks for the follow up on that. Is it just as 'acceptable' to travel back to the States in November? Saying that one would want to stay a full year?

Re: Best Route From BVI to Florida
I did it a few years ago, headed for Florida from St Thomas. You face the possibility of a late tropical wave with heavy squalls coming from the east and cold fronts dipping down from the west. We had both converging on us on that passage. We managed to work out a change in route to avoid the worst of it.

Re: Best Route From BVI to Florida
Silly Question maybe............but cant you just have a lovely downwind sail to Cuba then hop cross to Florida.
The reason i ask is that we are thinking of doing Cuba next winter and then rather than beating back to the VI's Leeward and Windward Islands well going over to Florida....We really want to see Cuba before it gets too .............well you know what i mean i hope
