Bad Chart Depth with E80-Navionics . . . Help, Please !

Hi Everybody,

I am having a problem with the Raymarine E80 chart plotter. When I use it with the Navionics Platinum, the depths are totally out of whack. I can see the ST unit and the paper charts coincide, but the chart plotter gives me a totally different number.

For example, around the Verrazano Bridge, where the sounder and chart indicate 80 feet, I get 15 feet in the chart plotter. I checked the units and measurements settings, and I confirmed that the plotter was set to feet. I tried the other units (meters and fathoms) and it also gives me erroneous depths.

Am I missing another setting? I am new with this equipment, so I would really appreciate your help/input.

Thanks!

I dare say your chartplotter is showing exactly what its chart data contains.

So do you think it is a problem with the Navionics card?

I suspect that the Navionics charts are BSB charts and not ENC charts. For the E80 to change the depth from feet to meters or fathoms the chart must be an ENC chart. The depth used by the Navionics charts is most likely in fathoms and thus can not be changed by the E80.

Hi Viking. Thanks for your answer. I am puzzled, since Raymarine specifically asks for the Navionics card. How can they recommend something incompatible? By the way, when I change the units in the chart plotter settings, the numbers change on the screen, but they are nothing close to the paper chart or the soundings.

On the other hand, if the paper chart shows 80ft (that would be MLW) 15 fathoms would be 90ft. It sounds like a big difference, considering the tides in NY harbor. What do you think?

Gus,

Since the depth values are changing the Navionics charts must in fact be ENC charts. Sorry, I didn't interpret your question as indicating that depth values were changing -- just that they were wrong. Also, there are some 90 foot depths in that area. I am now at a loss as to what the problem might be. If you haven't already done so, you might want to try calling or emailing Raymarine tech support.

Best of luck,

Paul

Navionics charts are vector charts.

I doubt that there is any problem with a plotter, and Raymarine is unlikely to be able to help. I am fairly certain that what you see is what's in chart data.

You may want to contact Navionics and suggest that they review data for the specific area.
