Re: Android or Apple

What about a Windows 10 tablet ?
Cheap and open like Android.
Can run the full version of OpenCPN.

Re: Android or Apple

Thanks all for the input.
As I am a happy android person I think there is no need to change.

Re: Android or Apple

i wonder, if you want a backup system and just duplicate the display of a b&g or raymarine - what happens when the main plotter fails?

you probably would be better off having independent systems running side by side, each having their own chart data - like opencpn or navionics with own gps sensors...

Re: Android or Apple

I have used all three and I prefer the Windows 10 tablets. OpenCPN full version, RayTech (older but capable software including routing and Raymarine radar support) and a plethora of digital SSB modes. You can also run Garmin Helm if that is your preference and more commercial navigational programs. Caching Google maps is easy and if you are into downloading movies/music for offline, it does that as well. Android is second best for interoperability and has a nicer touch interface.

The beauty of Android is that you can get large screen Android phones for next to nothing (locked to a carrier but you do not need to use the connectivity).
