G'Day Chuck (and Linda),

That's a very interesting use for AIS data! It would have saved a lot of anxious moments that I remember from days of checking into the MMSN years ago. Hve you found that it is reliable in terms of frequent updates by the sat service?

Cheers,

Jim (and Ann)

AIS Satellite vessel tracking

Hi Jim and Ann

We just heard about this from ZL1PWD who runs a marine checkin service from Russell in Bay Of Islands and is a net control on PAC Sea Net. I was surprised as well. But for example we asked about a certain vessel and he logged onto to his account with the AIS marine traffic and got a hit within a minute. The report was about 5 minutes old!

So now if we don't get a checkin for a couple days Peter logs onto his account and queries them. If they have a transmitter he will see them. Marine Rescue Papeete also subscribes to this service as well. Haha thinking about sneaking into Fatu Hiva for a week.....

All the best to you two

Re: AIS Satellite vessel tracking

Just got a heads up about a what seems like an effective SAis tracking app for andriod systems called ship info. It seems to be able to bypass the marine traffic sat ais data lock for non subscribers. It would be interesting if anybody could test it for boats they know well offshore. It's Working well for me at the moment, much better than marine traffic so far for finding a known target.

Re: AIS Satellite vessel tracking

Ship info has been working well so far, with with regular identified satellite fixes with the yacht well out of coastal receiver range. Now she is in range of marine traffic's receivers Marine traffic is showing much more info. So I am still using both.

Interestingly the position via satellite has been updating at the same time as marine traffic, so I think they must use the same S-AIS data which nakes sense, but where Ship info shines is it's ability to positively identify the vessel as opposed to guessing with marine traffic.

If anybody knows a yacht with AIS currently offshore it would be interesting to see if "ship info" app finds them. I am not sure where they scource the data from, but it seems pretty handy, and beats paying marine traffic for satellite access.
