AIS, Furuno GPS, Maxsea V12

Hi Everyone

I recently purchased ais engine3 and want to install it onto my boat. Now I am running maxsea 12 and have a furuno gps plugged into the laptop via the serial port. The ais engine has the little blue wire coming out of the serial cable and I have done a bit of reading about and it seems that I might have to wire the ais into the gps output from the furuno. I was just wondering is this so or will it still all work fine on maxsea if I have one input to the laptop for the gps and one for the ais.

Thanks
Ben

Re: AIS, Furuno GPS, Maxsea V12

The documentation on the engine3 is really poor, in fact it's labeled engine2. The description of the unit on the webpage states it has the ability to multiplex the gps signal, IOW, you can connect your gps to the ais and the output of the ais will include both ais and gps information. This is typical of most units. However, the documentation never mentions this feature so you have no clue how to connect it to take advantage of this feature.

Your alternative is to use a second serial port on the PC and connect the AIS to it using the blue wire and the negative from the 12v supply. This port will run 38,400.
