Windlass gear bearing how to replace?

I need to replace a broken gear bearing in my Nilsson V3000 gearbox. Anybody know how?

See attached photo.

Re: Windlass gear bearing how to replace?

Doesn't seem very broken to me put the needle back in the cage ! Or does it have excess play ?
Use some grease to hold it in place. If you want to change it just prize it out and get a new one . Not really sure what your question means !

Can you get the OEM bearing? If not, you are going to have to measure its outside diameter and the diameter of the shaft (micrometer or vernier caliber to the 1/000") and then go on line for roller bearings. The right one is out there, and probably cheaper than the OEM, because Nilsson used a stock bearing in its design - it's much too expensive to design and manufacture novel parts like bearings. Then, the old one has to be gotten out, which is a bunch easier if you can approach it from the side opposite from where it's going out, align it, and tap it out with a punch and a light hammer, given you can't get a shop press in there. It should be a tight fit.
Then, the new one goes in the opposite way, probably tapped in with the shaft inside it. Pack it with grease first.

The proper tool is a "cape chisel". Just break the cage and remove. You can modify your own chisel with a grinder. It needs to be flat on one side so it cuts close to the housing.

Re: Windlass gear bearing how to replace?

Thanks guys!

I was able to punch out the bearing from the other side. I'll take the new bearing and the case to a machinist today to have it pressed in.

Here are pics of the new bearing and what the back side of the old bearing looked like. I'm such a newb that I didn't know that was the actual bearing. I thought it was part of the case and the bearing fit into it.

Sitka only has one machinist and he's semi-retired. If anybody knows a machinist who wants to relocate to gain a virtual monopoly, Sitka is the place for them to go!

So for bearings that you don't have access to the back side, you use a "cape chisel"? I can see breaking the cage that the bearing cylinders are in, but then how do you get the case of the bearing out without damaging the sides of the hole that the bearing case is pressed into?
