WHICH WINDLASS FOR MY CAL2-30?

I know nothing about anchor windlass's and need some help. I plan to use 70' 5/16 chain and 200' 8 strand Brait. I normally anchor in Hawaii 10' - 30'. My battery bank is 2x90AH and I have a couple feet of freefall in the anchor locker. Anyone have experience with the Maxwell RC8-8?

The Lewmar 700 draws much less power and is easier to install.

1/4” ht chain may be sufficient for most conditions and is less weight so you may be able to carry an all chain rode.

I use that combination and never have to leave the cockpit to deploy or recover. Unless you need ultimate strength, take a look at g3 chain.

Re: WHICH WINDLASS FOR MY CAL2-30?

Historically the Maxwell's have been hard to beat. But not sure that still applies. Personally I would still bet on Maxwell. Your main focus should be a windless that works well with rope rode.... as it seems that's what you want to do. Typically a lot of 20-28 ft powerboats do that. So do some googling on your question and how well certain windlasses work with chain/rope rode.

If you can handle the weight and cost, 150 ft of chain would be very nice. Then most your anchoring would be with chain only and not have issues with retrieving rope rode etc. Yeah, 1/4 G4 chain might do it for you.

Thanks for the replies. I found a real good deal on the Lewmar Profish 1000 package including 25' of 5/16 G4 and 200' of 5/8 8 plait.
