Which Shakels are the best and were did you get them?

If you are asking about anchor shackels Crosley Makes the best that I have seen anywhere. I bought mine at Defender.com

Only ever used Ronstan S/S shackles from Oz, but you can get them in the US.

Never had one pop, but stretched a few under horrific load's flogging the boat.

Crosby alloy shackles are fine. Columbus-Mackinnon (CM) shackles are of similar quality. I recently bought a bunch of both.

Google them to find suppliers. Try:

CM Industrial

and lots of others.

I just read test results in a 2006 issue of Yachhting Monthly. The galvanized ones with the larger coloured pins are best. Otherwise the pins bend then pull out of the threaded ends. I've seen this happen. Having the non threaded hole with slightly heavier metal around it also helps.

Van Besst make Green Pins - the genuine item.
Red Pins are knock-offs but OK ars are the blue, orange, yellow, silver and a few others.
Bullivants make nothing.

Green and most coloured pin shackles will win any test over the everyday ones every single time.

Green pins are high tensile rated shackles for G80 chains and overhead lifting i.e. cranes. The everyday are recycled toyotas but fine is used properly.

PS. the pins are only painted not galv on most of the colour pin shackles.

PSS. Ronstan stopped making shackles a long while ago. They are chinese made and marketed by Ronstan.

It's becoming more and more difficult to find quality these days. With the introduction of big name Marine chain stores (guess who I am referring to), comes inferior products made in China. Buyer beware. Just because it looks like a shackle does not mean that it is.

Not everything is inferior. They do make some good stuff as well.

I also think there could be a fair whack of buyer driven purchasing decisions by these chains, in fact I know there is. By this I mean they buy what they are asked for by the shoppers 'cheap'. Cheap does come with a non-$ value cost.
