Where to Get 300' of 3/8" G4 Chain ?

I am looking to get new chain - 300' of 3/8" G4. I see I can buy a 'full drum' of 400' or a 'half drum' of 200' but have not found any economical way to buy 300'. (we are in Milford, CT, USA if it matters).

Anyone of a source that would sell 300' at a decent price?

I obviously could buy 400' and try to find someone who wants the spare 100' but that's a bit complex.

Re: where to get 300' of 3/8" G4 chain

I got my Accor brand G4 3/8" from Fastenal and had it delivered to a store nearby (saved 110 delivery charge from store to marina). The cost was very similar to discount stores but w/o the freight cost, in fact they matched the discount store price and added 50 for shipping from their warehouse to the store. I got a 1/2 barrel/200 ft and the next qty up would be a full barrel/400 ft not sure if they will sell you just 300 ft. If you were in the Annapolis area I would buy the 100 ft from you.

I have no connection to Fastenal just telling my story.......

Hmmm . . . I was thinking I wanted #500140632 that's hot galvanized 3/8" G4 - that's what I have now. Your number is "HG4: chain. They look to be very similar - same working strength same wire and same inside length but the g4 has an inside width .02" wider.

Evans,
Not sure what a "decent" price is for you.....but for Acco 3/8" G40 windlass chain, if $4.27/ft (for 400' full drum, ACCO 5001-40632) and/or $4.83/ft (for 200' half-drum, ACCO 5001-40631), and free freight, is "decent".....

Then have a look at 1st Chain Supply in Lowell, IN....
Gr 40 Windlass Anchor Chain
Chain, Chain Supplies, Binder Chains, Lifting Slings and Hooks

I'm not sure if they'd sell 300'.....but they might....

Good luck and Fair winds....

Yes, they come up first in google, but actually defender has better prices on full and half drums. We are toying with the idea of just getting a half drum. We only very very rarely use more than 200' of chain (usually when I make a mistake a judging distanced in a med moor/shore tie) and we could have some rope at the end to take care of that. That would be the logical solution, but somehow I still feel that 300' is the 'proper' length for chain.

Why not buy a full drum and use the extra for the secondary? That's what i did. So i have 300 on the primary and 100 + Nylon on the secondary.

That's exactly what we did the first time around (12 years ago). But we only carry one anchor on our bow and really only use that one. We have used a second anchor perhaps a handfull of times in a dozen years. So, the 'extra' chain for the secondary anchors is all in perfect shape.

Evans, we bought 300 feet by getting a price from Defender and then getting West to match it with free shipping to the store. Unfortunately, I can't remember what we paid but that seemed to be the cheapest way to go.

You can buy 300' from West Marine in Old Saybrook CT; if it's price break you're looking for get an online price from Defender and they'll beat it by 10%, good luck. Or you could go Visa Versa if you don't like WM.

Terrific. Thanks. I just got a decent 300' price from Defender. I have ordered from them and paid the shipping. It's worth the shipping price to have the barrel appear right under my bow (the marina will fork lift it from the truck). I am not so young any more I am going to have to push the chain around enough already to get it layed out on the ground to paint the length marks on it.

0.02" will make zero difference. Width isn't that important... as long as you aren't looking at 1/2" sort of a thing.

Don't paint your chain, it makes a mess and will be gone in less than a year. Use colored zip ties. You don't even have to clip the ends off and they'll go through wildcat without breaking and are easier to see and count your rode as you set your anchor.

Or you can get one of these.
