Thanks for everyone's replies... I am really trying my best to close out posts I create with something useful, in case others come along.
Short answer here is I am still too used to being in a non sailing state (Idaho) and so trying to do everything by the interwebnet.
Based on suggestions here, low and behold the lovely town of Bellingham (no sarcasm font here, I really love that town) has plenty to offer chain wise.
While West Marine is still holding steady on 5/16" G43 at $5.47 a foot (granted, to be fair, this is their
internet price, I did not call and ask their B'ham store in person) I did find by calling around (so haven't viewed / verified this chain in person yet):
LFS Marine (right at Squallicum):
5/16" High Test Campbell chain $2.45 / foot
5/16" High Test Acco $3.75 / foot
... the very nice gentleman at LFS (which has a large commercial section, which I did not realize from driving by their storefront) said they generally have plenty of in stock.
And, from Redden (basically right at Squallicum as well, technically farther from my gate but hey, it's not all about me, right?):
5/16" High Test Canadian Metal chain $2.62/foot
... the also nice gentleman at Redden said Redden was in the process of changing hands so stock was being held a little lean right now but he saw no reason to think a few hundred feet would be hard to come by with a little bit of notice.
So both local, just at the marina stores have good chain to offer... I gather from my reading that Acco is a bit of the gold standard but have read plenty of good things about Campbell (including decent
reviews in Practical Sailor) and good things about Canadian Metal (although couldn't find as many independent
reviews of them)... but in short means I'm probably not going to have to pay $5.00++ / foot nor am I going to have to pay shipping.
So thanks to everyone for their input and tips, much appreciated... as I stated many years ago when we first bought our
trailer sailor Nimble 20, I don't want to be a know it all, but someday I'd like to be a know it some...
