Re: What Windlass is this

I'm sure I have one of those in our library at work, or at least one that shares a lot of similar components.

I think, and it's only a think, the one we have was made by 'something sometihing Tooling Co' in the US. It isn't a name known today as a winch or windlass maker. Vintage wise it sure isn't something new.

I'll have a suss tomorrow and see what I can find for you.

That one certianly looks like it's a grunty beast.

Re: What Windlass is this

Had a suss of the one here and it has on it -

Albina Eng & Machine Wks
Portland OHL

We are pretty sure that's the way the name is spelt, it's tad hard to read.

The one we have does have a spot to out a motor on it so a little different than the manual but there sure is a strong family resemblance.

Re: What Windlass is this

I think this is a Simpson & Lawrence copy.

It certainly looks like an old Simpson & Lawrence ...

...but every one I've ever seen had the name cast into multiple parts.

There have been several "copies" such as the Polish Wilmex

I bet the Taiwanese windlass that F51 has seen is also a Simpson & Lawrence copy.

You can still get S&L parts in the U.K. and some of the later S&L designs are still made, although under a different name. Yours is an older model and I doubt any parts are interchangeable, especially if it is a copy.

I don't know if that is of any help.....
