Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

I was able to conduct 4 sets of the Sarca Anchor today.

Here is the first, the 3.5 to 1 scope with reverse test in "sandy mud"

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

SUPER Sarca. Reducing scope test.

A gentle current (from the starboard) pushed the boat out of alignment with the anchor during final portions of this test. This caused the anchor to pivot about 30 degrees and may have resulted in the anchor not holding as well as it could have.

Yes.
The little marina where we are living was crowded this week, us and 10 cruisers here. I did a quick anchor survey last night, just to see what people who are actually cruising between the Bahamas and the Caribbean are using. With 11 boats there, five are using Deltas. Three are using Bruce, two Mantus Supremes, and one Fortress. As primary anchors.

There are four boats with Fortresses rigged up as backups.

I have been contemplating buying a new anchor for our old boat, as this Delta has been on here for 31 years. Then I thought about it, and realized that of three previous owners, none of them felt the need to replace the Delta. Hence the little informal survey. I would be very interested in how a Lewmar Delta performed in similar tests. They're obviously still very popular among long time cruisers.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

Impressive. Thanks. I almost feel that the old cqr needs another chance. Surely the tried and trusted cqr, if set properly should work well on a soft bottom like that and survive the panope deep set challenge? Or maybe not... The way all these next gen anchors set and dig down deep is nothing short of amazing.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

I reckon a CQR would do just fine with the "Deep Set" test assuming the anchor could be set properly. My father and I used a CQR for 8 years and it behaved exactly per it's reputation: Difficult to set but held strong once set (Dad subjected it to 60 knots and 3 foot chop).

For us (in 1989), the answer (erroneously) to the CQR problems was the Bruce as it set very very reliably. Good thing we never put the boat in a situation where we needed it to hold strong.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

Here is a table that depicts all of the anchor tests that I have conducted so far. The numbers represent the video number contained in the title of each YouTube video.

The blank spaces are tests that have not been conducted.

The spaces with the red XXXXX are tests that I plan on conducting in the future.

Here is the SUPER Sarca at the sand/gravel location. 3.5 to 1 scope.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

And the Sarca at the same, sand/gravel location at 2.5 to one scope.

The anchor took a bit longer distance to set initially (about 3 anchor lengths) and was unable to reset after the 180 degree reversal. The anchor may have eventually reset but I was unwilling to continue a long "power drag" of the anchor for fear of dragging (and damaging) the camera across the rocky bottom.

This is actually the second attempt at this test (2.5 to 1, sand/gravel). The first take produced a video that is not view-able. However, I determined that the anchor behaved similarly in both tries (Good initial set that held boat, unsuccessful re-set).

Fortress F-16, 3.5 to 1 scope, at the sand/gravel site. The anchor struggled, but did eventually set and hold the boat.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

I know that back in October you reduced the flotation of the camera to minimise any effects on the anchor but i think there must still be some effect since on every single video each anchor always seems to land the right way up on the bottom. Never on its side. Is this intentional in order to get a nice clean set of videos for comparison.

The other point of note is the surprising difference in performance of an original when compared to a copy even when the anchors appear to look identical. It goes to show that the saving in buying a copy is a waste of time. I have a Bruce. How do i know if it is original or a copy?

Bravo! for an excellent series of videos.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

Thanks Salty Metals, The question of the camera's effect an the anchor drop as been raised continuously. I will soon conduct some video's of anchors in free fall with the camera NOT attached to the anchor. Stay tuned for those results.

It was not my intention to affect the anchor orientation with the camera float.

Both of my Genuine Bruce anchors have the words "Bruce" and "Made in Belgium" forged in the side of the shank in raised letters.
