anyone have any experience with Ultra Anchors? I saw a demo at strictly sail that was pretty interesting.

Hi Sarafina you certainly seem to be hooked on anchors!

Galvanized steel is preferred over 316 for anchoring.

funny how not having one for awhile can do that to a girl!

We looked at them at the show before we managed to salvage our little danforth...

and I gotta admit a little of it is the shiny sparkly thang ; -)

The Ultra is a Turkish copy of the Spade.

From this you can assume certain things on the basis that the genuine Spade will be superior in both performance and quality.

Specifically, the Ultra is made from 316 stainless, which is a very weak material to build an anchor from. (Tensile strength below mild steel). Read: inadequate. Unfortunately high tensile stainless steels are very expensive and it's not something the majority of customers question. Galvanized options are not available because the Ultra's hollow shank cannot be hot-dip-galvanized (the Spade is a two parter). Not only is constructed from a poor grade of steel but is built in cranked sections (unlike the Spade's even curves) which introduces obvious stress concentrations (weak spots).

Stainless steel is generally very expensive - unless it isn't. A good quality stainless anchor should cost around 4 times that of the galvanized equivalent. If not, then there are some serious compromises somewhere. The Spade is a complex design which is challenging to fabricate. Look at the price of a galvanized Spade and do the math.

So the usual story is: avoid copies.

I'd be wary of a sandbox with tiny anchor toys attempting to show what anchoring is like in real life on a real boat. It's much better to get the advice of people who are actually using the anchor and have some experience anchoring in a variety of conditions.

I'm pretty sure that's why she started this thread! Just to be curious, what stainless does Rocna use for their stainless version Craig?

SARA! What have you done? Starting an anchor thread? Let me guess... next your gonna post a thread asking what caliber has the best stopping power vs. kill range!

I would be concerned with any stainless steel anchor considering the way stainless steel can work harden and develop stress cracks, and then fail without warning.

The anchor looks great going in, and then a fluke cracks off with the slightest tug.

They definitely look pretty, but maybe just keep them for boat shows.

2205 duplex high tensile (for the shank). 316L for the fluke where the design geometry provides enough reinforcement.

Definitely an issue with an austenitic grade like 316L, all the more so given the low yield point (I would suggest lower than many perfectly foreseeable real world scenarios in the form of the Ultra's shank).

But you should be specific about the steel, because to knock all stainless anchors is misleading.

I didn't know, honest I didn't!! No one told me it was a BAD THING! I'll try to do better in the future!
