Re: Tight Anchorage spacing?

I am glad it works out for you, and all those who you may share an anchorage with. If we are talking about storms, I suppose the thread would be titled something other then;

"Tight Anchorage spacing" eh?

Re: Tight Anchorage spacing?

Boy, I'm learning a lot from this thread! I've never sailed the Caribbean, nor the east coast of the USA. Many, many other parts of the world, though.

Dawned on me that in 20 years of sailing I've never set anchor is less than seven metres of water. And here some of you apparently think it "normal" to anchor in seven FEET of water!

Wow. Just.......wow.

Re: Tight Anchorage Spacing?

SV Mariane...The Catamarans anchor in 4-5 ft on a regular basis (MLW). Lucky them...Lots of skinny water here in the Bahamas. Hard to find 7 meters near land! The entire sea of Abaco is average less than 4m. 7m here means you are heading out the cut.

Re: Tight Anchorage Spacing?

i usually anchor in about 20 ft, and i use 160-140 ft all chain.
have had someone try to rake up my anchor 3 times in one sitting--they sukked--they did succeed in dragging up a friend's anchor and caused his boat to drag--we were all less than 100 ft apart and each had over 100 ft chain on ground....
..the offending boat coulda been a corn farmer.....did a lot of plowing then left the anchorage....

Re: Tight Anchorage Spacing?

My tough old boat can handle a few more beer bumps. Most of the shiny new 6 and 7 figure boats stay reasonably clear of me! No fenders at anchor. Actually I been thinking about pounding a bunch of big spikes through a 2x12 for each side, and hanging them where fenders would normally go. GRRRRRR!!!! YOU WANNA PIECE A DIS? LOL! But I try to anchor a reasonable distance away, and if I can't, there are other places to go. It's a big ocean.

Re: Tight Anchorage Spacing?

it always seems on these threads that there is the right way (i.e. your way) and then .................................................. .......... the idiots doing it wrong (i.e. everyone else)

so regardless of what you do, once you pull into the anchorage you should just assume everyone will drag that night or swing into you when the tide/wind changes

If someone anchors too close, I start the genny, turn up the music (the genre of which being my best guess as to what the other boat hates), strip off my clothes (unless of course THEY are French registered or naked themselves, at which time the music goes to church organ)... If all else fails I try several high speed dinghy laps (with aforementioned clothing choice)

Re: Tight Anchorage Spacing?

There are lots of good options for dealing with unwanted crowding on your stern. A small blower set up to force air through your holding tank and out the vent, could be good. You won't smell it down below, but your neighbor on your stern will. Bug spray. Lots of it, and often. If your neighbors ask, tell them about your horrible cockroach and flea infestation while you brush unseen vermin off of you. Lice, anyone? LOL! Some really smelly cigars? (burn them in a can with some charcoal if they are simply too repulsive to smoke) but capngeo has some good ideas too. Oh, and take pictures of them. LOTS of pictures. I don't know why, but that creeps people out. Don't even need to save them... just take them and delete.

Near nudity? Bring it on, Zee! Of course THAT didn't work!

A series of really loud farts might have done the trick. They even got "fart smell in a can". Google it. You can always fake the sound if you can't squeeze out a real one.

I'd hoped that when I installed a wind generator this would keep boats from anchoring too close, but the damned thing just isn't noisy enough. I've also tried a strategy of grabbing the binoculars, standing atop the coach roof and watching them intently while they set anchor. This has not proved to be an effective strategy, but maybe if I strip down nude first? Thanks for the tip!

^^^^ yeah, me too^^^^

Wow I think I have seen you in a few anchorages.

It's all no good. I tried heavy metal music once with no effect. If we strip they just pull out the binoculars out and stare at my wife

Anybody who anchors today realizes that Chapman's 10:1 scope is just plain unattainable in our crowded harbors. I did come across one jerk in what looked like a home made sailboat put together by a junior high shop team over at Cuttyhunk one year. It must have had over 100' of clothes line attached to a toy anchor. That setup created an uproar by others who snagged his so called rode, had to pull his anchor just to get theirs free. And of course, nobody was on board but they posted a sign warning KEEP OFF.
