Find the different websites of the different anchor makers.

Then apply the LOAD of your boat based on where you intend to anchor based on anticipated winds strength, and choose your anchor size. Only YOU can make that choice.

And because the Tayana is a heavy displacement vessel, you will probably want to round up.

73 pound rocna, 300' 3/8" chain, 7:1 scope. excellent choices, IMHO.

What a difference! The Rocna grabs and holds with noticeable authority. It sets right away and stays put. Really different and much better. My wife has nicknamed it "Gibraltar" as in the Rocha of Gibraltar.

Re: The Delta Failed us Again.

One could spend days/weeks/months even years doing internet research on anchors, Rocna with all the mess they made when changing manufacturers, and new gen (generation) anchors.

Over the years, though, many boating forums have, as you can imagine, discussed the very same issues, over and over again. They have also exhibited, as has this forum, a handful of skippers who have BTDT and write quite well, on anchoring and other subjects. One, then, tends to get into the habit of "trusting" those skippers, because they do their research, do their own homework and then share what they've learned.

Oddly enough, every single boating forum I look at, on my regular daily basis, has come to the conclusion that the new gen anchors are better than the old ones, even though some still swear by their CQRs, etc.

When I did my research on a new anchor in 2007, the newer Mantus and Manson Supreme had not yet been designed and built.

My choice was a Rocna, sized for the waters I sail in.

The two keys that got my attention were:

"It pulled me off the bow when it set so quickly and firmly."

"What's your ENTIRE boat worth to you for the difference of a few hundred dollars?"

So, the OP has an anchor that doesn't work where he sails. Whether a bigger one would work, we just don't know, 'cuz we don't have enough information for sizing his anchoring system (which I've written some about myself and linked on this and other boating forums).

That said, here's a good summary:

Why NEW GEN Anchors are Better:

Anchors & TEST Results of New Generation Anchors EXCELLENT & Important

Ok...stop...stop stop!!! You're all going after anchors again.
Dana Point is notorious for a bad bottom. Read in the guides will ya! It states the bottom in the east anchorage is very hard clay. It was basically bull-dozed to it's clay bed and that was it! I anchored there with my Rocna last year and had a hell of a time. I'm lucky if the tip dug in 6"s.
