Sweet . . . I Get to Spend a Grand on New Anchor Chain

I'm guessing this is totally shot. You'll notice (beyond the amazing rust, which is much better after I hammered the hell out of the chain for an hour) that one of the links is much thinner than the other. Doesn't seem bueno to me. 5/16th G3 and G4 both fit.



I found 275' feet for a grand or so:

It has been a while since I had to replace chain but when I did it was through the Acco (now Peerless) chain franchise. In my particular case I purchased it at the nearest place to my boat (Tucson, AZ) which was trucked in for free from LA; sooooo, figure that if you can move it yourself you could get your own barrel or half-barrel and take it south yourself. Then it was $900 for 400 feet of High Test 3/8 ($2.25 per foot) when chandleries wanted $4 to $5 per foot, but you had to get a whole barrel (or half barrel), they didn't want the hassel of measuring and cutting it. I needed 300 feet and asked how much that would be, and they said $900...
Also once upon a time there was a great bulk marine supply place in National City(?) called San Diego Marine Hardware (not Exchange).

The one I linked to in my first post does free shipping, plus maybe $100 for forklift fees. The whole thing weighs in around 300 pounds I guess. I think I can use a dolly for that.

Nice call on the San Diego Marine Hardware. They don't have much listed on their site, but I shot them an email and will call Monday morning as well. Thanks for the tip on that! At ~300lb's shipping seems to be the biggest issue.

If I knew a lot about chains I wouldn't make a thread with a picture showing two links asking for opinions (helpful or otherwise).

Just be glad you caught the (out of time) anchor links dockside. Want any easy way to clean the rust off your chain, hook it up to your car and drag it around the gravel parking lot, leaves snaky impressions that will have the whole marina talking.

They have a terminal in San Diego, so you can eliminate the expensive portion of the shipping by simply picking it up at the terminal. They palletize everything they ship at the site they pick it up from themselves and charge you by the pallet/weight. Very reasonable rates on the west Coast.
