Splicing 8 brait to chain

I'm trying to splice some 8 brait to chain and it's not quite as simple as it appears. I've not really found anything on You-Tube and the .pdf files are woefully vague.

I asked Brian Toss if he had anything and was told that it is on his "to do" list. He did tell me to avoid the splice that weaves through the chain links. He also is working on a different splicing method he thinks will be better.

In the meantime, has anyone come across any decent videos? I work better after seeing it done instead of just reading about it.

Good luck. I have one on our stern anchor rode and it's not very pretty. I have no doubt that it's strong but that is not everything. A shovel splice ( through the links) is much more ugly.

Backsplicing is the best way to join rope to chain.

The basic splicing is almost identical to an eyesplice.
Divide the strands of rope into 4 pairs. Feed two through the last link one way, then two the other way. Then proceed to splice as for an eyesplice.

Here is a link to a Sampson video for splicing 8 strand:

If you need an easy step by step description with photos, I will hunt up the link to a thread I wrote a while back detailing this.

The rope in that picture is woven differently than the Brait I have. Once you go back through the link, you get lost in the standing part.

Re: Splicing 8 brait to chain

Thank you Seaworthy Lass,
I have always used the back splice on 3 strand and it's a piece of cake.

I may be getting hung up on the left hand vs right hand strands. After all the 3 strand splices I'm surprised that it's confounding me.

I have used this splice. Not a backward splice but in the anchor chain.

Bram

I had my rigger splice some 8 brait to the end of my chain. He used the same splice.

That is a Shovel splice. Best known to shovel up loads of mud.

Re: Splicing 8 brait to chain

That splice going up through the links is far more likely to suffer from chafe, the back splice method is far more durable.

I've used these instructions a couple of times. Pretty easy to follow...

Re: Splicing 8 brait to chain

I will comment that . . . while it is prettiest to do the back splice completely correctly . . . . You can get full strength just by doing enough tucks and keeping the tension even on all the strands . . . The tucks actually don't have to go in exactly the recommended places or order.

I'm not sure I understand the question? I bought a needle and fid that explained it. I would have it spliced even with limited success in doing it.

Or the other side. Using a thimble? I wouldn't do it without one. Feeding through a winch?

For feeding thru a windlass, I have had success with this method:

Re: Splicing 8 brait to chain

If you are not familiar with splicing octoplait (8 Strand Rope)

The rope is constructed from 8 strands, laid up in 4 pairs. Two of these pairs are made up from right hand (Z laid) yarns, and two pairs from left (S laid) yarns.
On larger sized octoplait, its is quite common to find either the right or left hand laid strands identified with a different coloured yarn running through it. On smaller diameter ropes this is not usually the case.

To help with the splice, use a marker pen to mark either the left or right hand laid strands.

This really does help the beginner with splicing 8 stranded rope.
