Simpson Lawrence SeaTiger 555 Gipsy ID

I want to mount a 555 windlass on my S2 11.0 (came with the boat) According to the seller, it apparently does not have the correct gipsy for the 5/16 BBB chain the boat has - if anyone has whatever the appropriate gipsy is, I would like to hear from you. Looks like B80 or RCB70, but I could be wrong.

I have the gipsy off and it has 2 numbers on it ... on the clutch cone side is 555 (OK, made for that model) On the inside of the business part of the chain gipsy, on the side farthest outboard on the windlass is a number that appears to be 64 or maybe B64? Looking at the manuals there is NO B64 gipsy? There is a BB54 and a B65. Extensive Google searching has not lead to an answer ....

Thanks all
Robin

Re: Simpson Lawrence SeaTiger 555 Gipsy ID

I believe the Seatiger uses similar gypsy labeling as my Seawolf 500. I'll have to dig out my manual and notes on the boat but if I recall the only important thing is the first number on the gypsy, in your case the #6. The other numbers are SL version revisions, casting numbers, etc.

Also be aware that the original SL manuals were HUGELY optimistic about what chain would fit in what gypsy. My manual shows 10-15 different chain sizes for my gypsy and I can guarantee from experience they don't all work.

You can also check with John at SL Spares in Scotland. He used to work for SL in the windlass end of things and bought out all the rights and old parts for the old windlasses. If you need any parts that aren't standard (like bearings and such) he's the go to guy.

Re: Simpson Lawrence SeaTiger 555 Gipsy ID

Hi Robin,

Found a copy of a copy of the manual in a box at the house.

For the Seawolf a 6 series gypsy will work with 3/8" BBB or 5/16 HT chain. This I have tested and confirmed personally.

The 7 series gypsy will work with 5/16 BBB. Not sure if it will work with any other chain sizes/types.

Re: Simpson Lawrence SeaTiger 555 Gipsy ID

my drawings give me:
555-RCB60S RCB60 gipsy 1/2" rope chain 1
555-RCB70S RCB70 gipsy 10mm ropechain
555-B54 B54 Gipsy 1/2"chainonly
555-B65 B65 Gipsy 12mm chainonly
on the distributorsite 555-B65 comes up as "B65 gypsy" - not saleable, under 555-B64 nothing comes up

Re: Simpson Lawrence SeaTiger 555 Gipsy ID

Thanks for all the information!

A question for all of you ... can I take this gipsy to a marine store and simply test how different chains align and mesh with it? Or, maybe it's different when the chain is under load?

Thanks again

Re: Simpson Lawrence SeaTiger 555 Gipsy ID

you can, but it will be inconclusive:
without the pull of anchor or boat even 8mm chains have fit 10mm gypsies

Re: Simpson Lawrence SeaTiger 555 Gipsy ID

For the benefit of Goolge searchers everywhere, here is some information about gypsy for the Seatiger 555 manual windlass:

I contacted John at SL Spares in Scotland, and here are his replies:

Quote:
The BB54 is a gipsy for a different windlass and that is a mistake in the manual.

There is a B54 used on the Seatiger, but that is for 1/2" chain.

Probably the RCB70 gipsy would be best for you as it takes 5/16" G43 HT ISO, info on this gipsy is also incorrect in the manual on this gipsy.

The B80 takes 5/16" BBB, but you would have to locate a second hand one as the pattern is no longer available to have them manufactured.

The first digit after the letter(s) gives you the number of pockets and the last digit is the gipsy design revision.

Regards, John
So, for my B64 gypsy with 6 pockets, he says:

Quote:
The records I have show a couple of chains:

7/16” with a pitch of 33mm
1/2” with a pitch of 34.2mm

I would get a short sample to test first.

Regards, John
