Screw Anchors

Anyone have any 1st hand experience with screw(auger) anchors in storm/hurricane conditions.

A great question. I live on Boca Ciega Bay, and have thought about adding spider lines to ground anchors for tropical storms. I'll watch this thread. Anyone used these things, and did they hold?

I believe they are used as moorings, so it would be a question of dimensioning the gear and the type of bottom substrate..... But no personal experience yet so others may chime in...

A good frind here has one for his 45' cat. He has all diving gear onboard so Installs this screw mooring whenever a cyclone alert comes up which is very rare in FrPol though

They are used extensively here in the Caribbean. Usually three 12 inch dia. anchors driven into firm sand connected together.

Here is our data regarding our Spade Anchor Skrew Moorings. On the chart the "Boat Weight Vertical Lift"= top number is the size boat it will hold, the bottom number is the traditional mooring size it will replace.

Fairly simple to install.

In areas where they can be deployed they are amazing. In hard bottoms they are worthless. So it really depends on the application. There is no more efficient long term mooring system available though.

Yes, They can be removed for inspection as often as needed. Or relocated as often as needed.
Our research has shown that typically only the exposed part of the shank suffers any deterioration though out the years (hoop). As the part of the Skrew that is buried, is somewhat entombed and suffers very little deterioration.

Diver installation is very simple. First we recommend a "poke" test. Take a Metal rod and push thought at the location you want the Skrew. If the rod goes in the Skrew will. The insert pry bar into loop and walk the Skrew down. The "Jet Skrew" takes about 5 minutes to install (1 diver), the next size up the 1600 takes about 10 minutes (1 diver), the 2500-850000 take about 30 minutes (2 divers) or 45-60 minutes with 1.
