Re: Rocna's new anchor/ Hey, Anchor thread!!!

Looking at the published videos, there is one where Rocnas Spade Copy digs down in a fairly soft bottom. It digs down as far as the height of the shank and then continues to move. Not trying to dig deeper. Not stopping. Dragging.
Maybe they should try to copy Sarca Excel's "toe down" at the tip of the anchor.
Not a word about the strength, or what quality of steel that is used in this Spade Copy. This is conspicuous by it's absence.
Note that I don't mind the "copy" bit, that's fine as long as the anchor performs, but these people deserve to have this fact rubbed in, considering their previous marketing.

Re: Rocna's new anchor/ Hey, Anchor thread!!!

I think through forums like this we should put some pressure on Rocna to reveal some more detail of the construction of the Vulcan. All they have said so far is Hi tensile steel for the shank.

To be fair the main opposition to this anchor, Spade and Ultra, do not list the thickness of their shanks. With the fabricated construction on these anchors that makes it impossible (without damaging a sample of the anchor) to calculate the shank strength. They can make changes to the shank design informing consumers.

The complicated machined "I" beam construction of the Vulcan shank won't lend itself to direct comparison with other anchor shanks, even if know the steel used. However, the strength can be correctly calculated with computer analysis and can be crudely estimated by making some simple assumptions.

Re: Rocna's new anchor/ Hey, Anchor thread!!!

Thanks Nolex for the explanation re galvanizing and overview.
I have added quite a bit of windage with the new solar panels and extended Bimini, so splurging on a better anchor is a consideration
The video on post 49 is quite impressive so it will be interesting to get some independent reviews and of course a price?

Does anyone know if the Vulcan is made in Vancouver or China?

I got ten bucks says China. If a product doesn't advertise where it from, it's from China.

Re: Rocna's new anchor/ Hey, Anchor thread!!!

Logic dictates that it is made on Vulcan. This anchor is easily confused with the Romulan, though.

The anchor is made in China in a factory owned and run by Canada Metal.

We were commenting at the boat show that it could have been used as a star ship on Star Trek. The phasers would shoot out of the pointy tip.

That's reassuring.... What could possibly go wrong?

My friend bought Chinese galvanized chain for his mooring... it lasted only one season before rusting through. But, it did cost less than the North American products.

Re: Rocna's new anchor/ Hey, Anchor thread!!!

At the SSCA gam I bought an anchor refinishing kit from the Spade folks that solves the "regalvanizing" issue. Although not REAL galvanization, its certainly a lot cheaper - I think I paid $65. Its a two part epoxy with anti-corrosion fillers.

We bought it for our original bruce anchor - we are going to have it sandblasted and sprayed with this epoxy.

When you pay someone to sandblast the anchor and spray this product, won't it be the same price, or more expensive, than having it regalvanized?

No, the minimum cost for regalvanizing here is $300 at a shop up in JAX. We don't have a car so we would have to rent one. So, that would add to the cost. Plus there is the time factor.

We are paying $120 for the sandblasting and paint labor plus the $65 in paint.

Re: Rocna's new anchor/ Hey, Anchor thread!!!

The photo shows a custom fit roller that was made for my R33 in Seattle. The shank is a different fit, but will work on many powerboats and sailboats with a sprit. The Vulcan self deploys quite easily. I cannot tell any difference on anchoring between the R33 and the Vulcan 33. Both feel like I hooked a chain to a concrete piling.

You might be wasting $185. The paint on the tip will probably wear off the first time you anchor. It will not be able to heal itself like G. Even a cheap re-G will last months. Touch up paint will only look good at the dock.
You need to get several people together and get at least 3 anchors done at the same time.
"Time factor", what 's that?

Re: Rocna's new anchor/ Hey, Anchor thread!!!

Galvanization does not "heal itself." It's a zinc coating that wears off like a sacrificial anode. But you're correct about paint being a complete waste of money offering nearly zero protection.

Please tell me if I will be ok. I just bought a N.O.S. 35# Delta for $120 US for my 13000# sailboat.
