Other Boats Dragging

Another boat dragged in the Anchorage last night.
Nothing unusual in that. The record for me has been 40 boats dragging in one night. Including 3 with their chains wrapped together, drifting downwind, each shouting in a different language.

This one was a bit bigger than most, however. . Thankfully it was down wind of us.

There was another large boat a few months ago that got into difficulties in 40K while attempting a stern tie up. We were anchored just outside the harbour. They tried to set 2 anchors and when they dragged the anchors tangled. They spent 4 hours trying, ultimately unsuccessfully, to sort out the mess.
Perhaps these professionals need to read our anchoring threads.

Tie a steel cable around the chain so that the anchor can be lowered to free it from that chain.

ciao!

It looks tame in the photo, but in real life it was bloody scary. He was swinging, the anchor was swinging. Before that the ship almost wiped out half the harbor as he fought to maneuver in 40 Knots with 2 tangled anchors.

The captain tried to bring the ship into calm water, to sort things out, which happened to be just at the back of our anchored boat so we had a ringside view.
My niece that was visiting at the time was impressed with the entertainment. Although she was less impressed with the 40knots at anchor.

It was at the Greek island of Ikaria. From the legend of Icarus. It can be a windy place. The pilot book notes
"Personaly I think Icarus had his feathers blown off around here and did not get too close to the sun."

He puts a line on it. They heave the line up aboard the ship. Clear of the flukes of the anchor, heave the hook up a tad, slip the line, the chain sinks to the bottom. All clear. Been there, done that.

I think he's trying to retrieve his life jacket that's hanging on the ladder.

Re: Other Boats Dragging

Used to see anchor tangles all the time in English Harbor(Antigua).First thing to do is get out the rest of your fenders because this will be a close encounter. Know how to do a rolling hitch on chain because you have to take the strain off of the anchor that is tangled in the other guys chain to be able to pull the anchor loose from that chain. Say your pulling your anchor and find that your hook is pulling up some other yachts chain, you need to pull your anchor up enough to put a line(rolling hitch) on their chain and then let out on your rode to loosen your hook. This sometimes can be done from deck level, but often needs a dink in the water which is where fingers can get hurt or worse. Depending on the strain on the line to the other chain, it is probably best to cut the line that you tied to their chain, rather than try to untie it. This will probably all be done to the tune of screaming obcenities from the other boat(even if they laid their chain over yours) and much amusement from other boats. If you are in areas where Med tying is the norm, then anchor tangles(fights) are the norm. Other than chartering, I never tied stern to, just to avoid this. Its is good entertainment if you are not the one tangled.____Grant

I've had to do the same thing after hooking an unmarked cable. A good technique to add to the repertoire, because sometimes the only other option is to lose the anchor.
