Nilsson Windlass

Now that I have replaced the motor on my VC 3000 windlass it's time to put it all back together again. I have two questions about these windlass and I hope somebody who has rebuilt them can answer. First question is, when I took the gear box apart I noticed there wasn't any gasket between the two halfs, should there be one? or should I just use some liquid gasket to seal them? Second question, it says in the old manual to fill the gearbox half way with Castrol TC fluid grease or equivalent, I have looked everywhere for this grease and it seems nobody in my area has a clue where to get it. I did find it on a castrol web site and it says it is a semi fluid lubricant, beinf lithium base water resistant semi fluid grease, but every place I went (auto parts, marine, tractor,) couldn't help. Do I really need this type grease or will any 90 weight oil work.

Thanks
Captden

You would need to put some sealant between the gearbox halves, threebond is as good as any, Email Castrol and ask them for the dealer nearest to you, that you could get the grease from, or ask for a recommended equivalent (another manufacturer) grease if they cannot supply.

Thanks for the info on the sealent Steve. I contacted Castrol USA and if you can believe this they claim they don't carry that product in the U.S.
Does any listers that are overseas know who I can contact for Castrol TC
semi fluid grease. Or any other grease I can use for this windlass.

Use Stens 00 grease

Capn Den:

You can use Stens 00 grease.

Stens Part 770123 - 00 Grease. Replaces OEM: SNAPPER, 7061017, SNAPPER, 61017, SNAPPER, 11050 Specs: Size:1 quart bottle, Used in transmissions, gear boxes, and disc drives that specifically call for a grease of this consistency

The stuff is used in Snapper Lawn mowers so you should be able to find it in any local dealer that services lawn equiptment or failing that online. A one quart bottle cost me about $12 and should last as long as you have the windlass.
