New West Marine Recall on Rocna Anchors

Rocna Recall http://content.westmarine.com/documents/pdfs/RECALLS/PRODUCT SPECIFICATION NOTICE FOR WEBSITE - 8 01.pdf

It seems the company changed the metal the anchor was tested at.

Me either.

But, you can find it on West Marine's Recalls webpage (first item at the moment):

West Marine - a responsible vendor recalls Rocna

We must all congratulate West Marine for their responsible recall notice on Rocna anchors due to Rocna using sub-standard steel.

Here is a link to West Marine's recall site.

WM refers a reader to the Rocna site for their explanation.

Suffice it to say that Rocna does not come across as credible.

West Marine does, which I have said before.

Keep this in mind when making purchasing decisions.

Re: New West Marine recall on Rocna anchors

It's technically not a recall. West Marine states, that if after talking to Rocna customer service you still are not happy with your anchor, they (west marine) will refund your money.

I own a 33lb Rocna but am feeling a little ripped off since I paid a premium price for low grade metal. Sheesh! I guess I can just swap my anchor for the less expensive, but heavier, 45lb Manson and pocket the remaining 50 dollars.

So what do you think West Marine will do with an ever growing pile of second hand Rocna anchors

Pete
I would strongly suggest that there were legal discussions with Rocna, and Rocna is going to have to take these back.

Does Rocna's handling of this remind you of the way Ford handled the Pinto, whereas WM is more akin to the way Johnson and Johnson handled the Tylenol poisoning problem?

Re: New West Marine recall on Rocna anchors

This is certainly very interesting, however aside from taking the product back and refunding customer's their money, there seems to be little else in regards to recourse. I have a Rocna that falls into the recall, but then what? Do I go out and buy a Manson Supreme?

I'd be curious to here Craig's feedback on this. He has been a vocal proponent for Rocna (for obvious reasons). We've seen plenty of F.U.D. (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) laid out by the various vendor marketing teams who represent anchor manufacturers on this and other sites. (Somthing that leaves somewhat of a bad taste in my mouth in general). I'd like to see the same manufacturer stand-up and stand behind their products now as they have done so vehemently when trying to market them to us.

Re: New West Marine Recall on Rocna Anchors

And still the deception continues:
FACT: The substandard metal referred to in the statements from both WM and Rocna claim a batch from early 2010.

FACT: All of the photos of bent shanks that have been published online predate that period of time.

FACT: The "Venice" photo was from early 2009 and was manufactured Dec 2008.

FACT: West Marine must be applauded for their proactive approach and their own tests and investigations that have resulted in "recall" as such.

It will be interesting to see just what the spin doctors come up with when anyone does contact support for answers manufactured to the highest standard they can pen.

Interesting to compare the 2 test bed photos on the website, one bent and one not?
