I feel bad for Peter, not Craig, who seemed to take excessive pleasure in constantly slagging the competition even after his dad's firm was sold...why? on forums like this.

After this brouhaha began, he finally shut up and has fallen off the radar.

He and his tiresome advocacy of a compromised product are not missed. Even if it was a Bambury decision to thin the broth, Craig Smith made a minor career out of touting illusionary advantages over the anchors of companies like Manson, Fortress and others and casting aspersions on their own manufacturing method, even as Bambury et al were cheaping out in China.

My understanding is that West Marine writes into its agreement to sell your product that the vendor (Rocna in this case) will take back any unsold inventory (including returns) at the end of the year.

A fresh batch of Rocna Anchors have arrived in North America in July. Let us hope for the best.

Re: New West Marine Recall on Rocna Anchors

Yet another company cheaping out on construction while leaving the price sky-high. If it were a car stereo or a telephone it would bother me a lot less but at times our lives depend on our anchors. Obviously the folks a Rocna care a lot less about the quality of their product than they do about profits.
I'm sure that they bragged to their investors that they were producing anchors in China but all they tell us is "different countries where our anchors have been produced". If it's OK to do, why lie about it?

Re: New West Marine Recall on Rocna Anchors

What a can of worms I opened up

I'm glad I have an older CQR that was made in Scotland.

Glad West Marine stands behind the stuff they sell.

Pete

Under their purchase and resale agreements, a product returned to West must be "repurchased" by the OEM--so they go back to Rockna. West Marine is covering it's own butt--which is good by me considering te amount of West Marine stock we own.

From a user viewpoint, the question is whether the anchors are of sufficient strength and what is their point of origin. If they are coming from China, I personally wouldn't take one as a gift. Elsewhere, it depends. There is certainly much to reccomend the design but there are other manufacturers with similar designs. On the other hand, we use an older style anchor forged in Scotland that I have no doubt will work so, for us, it's academic, eh?
