Mooring Snubber problem

Hello all,

We're relatively new sailors and are looking for some advice about mooring snubbers.

We have a 27' Hunter, moored at Newport. Last night we went out there, it was windy, about 17 mph gusting to about 30.

We have 2 lines on the bow, one to a piling, one to a cleat on a finger pier, a spring line and two stern lines, both going to cleats. The line is 3/8" twisted nylon.

All the lines were checked last night before we went to bed, the boat was being tossed around quite a bit but all looked fine.

This morning our line was chafed through in the snubber. (Please see pic).

So the question is, have we threaded the snubber incorrectly? The line goes through an "S" at the end and we notice part of it is quite sharp where the rope goes through. The brand of snubber is Sea Dog Line Snubber.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Here's the best picture I have of our snubber and the way the line runs through it. No problems with chaff following two seasons of continuous anchoring and use. Look at the bottom junction with the line, I think you need to feed (stitch) the line through so that it locks in place only allowing the rubber to stretch, and no back and forth stretch movement between the rubber and the line. I think you may have either come in from the wrong side or more likely, used a line that was too small for the snubber size. The dock line should fit snuggly through the ends locking it in place.

Kenomac, thank you so much for your reply.

You hit the nail on the head, the line is too small for the snubber and there lies the chafing problem. I looked up the size of the snubber and it's for 1/2 to 5/8 rope. We did have it threaded the same as in your picture.
