Metric / Inch Chain

One of my customers in Panama asked me to quote him on
"12 mm Calibrated Galvanized Short Link Chain with a pitch of 36 mm."

Is this the same as ACCO 7/16" ISO G43 Chain?

The 7/16" chain is .467 inches or 11.86 mm in diameter. The pitch is 1.4 inches or 35.56 mm. The inside width is .66 inches or 16.76 mm.

I don't know what windlass or wildcat his customer has.

What do you guys think, would 7/16 work in place of 12 mm?

Re: Metric / Inch Chain

I don’t know the answer to this but as Maxwell makes an issue that their chainwheel (gypsy) can handle metric and imperial size chain while the others, such as Loftrans, specify the chain to use, my assumption would be that they are not usually interchangeable. But it is something that I would be interested to know for sure. Anybody?

Re: Metric / Inch Chain

When I looked into it my lofrans Falkon would handle 3/8 or 10mm.

PITA to look up the specs for 10mm chain, but I finally found it. Can't recall where.

Re: Metric / Inch Chain

Have been going through this trying to size new chain for my old Simpson Lawrence windlass. The manual specs about 10 different chain types DIN, metric and SAE standard for my gypsy which I have determined is totally bogus. So after measuring, testing 2' pieces of several grades and sizes and about an hour on the phone with a very helpful gentleman at 1st Chain Supply my determination is the most critical spec will be the pitch.

I tested several different pitches of 3/8 and 5/16 chain and the only thing that seemed to matter was having the right pitch or links/ft. A 3/8 or 5/16 with the wrong pitch would jam. 3/8 or 5/16 with the correct pitch both worked fine although the 3/8" fit the pockets in the gypsy a little better.

The best thing of course would be to get a sample of the chain from the customer and measure.
