McMurray Windlass info

I got the info below from boatworkfl (Pat) on the Bayliners Owner forum. It is so helpful I asked (and got permission) to repost it. This could save fellow McMurray windlass owners weeks/months of research! Kudos to Pat for sharing!
Any other useful tidbits please post them. I love my McMurray and it will be great to keep the old girl running for a while yet!

I spent a lot of time to find all this and I hope it helps my friends on this site, and anyone else that owns this brand of windlass. After disassembling this windlass, I think that it is one of the best of this type. Just do not pull the anchor with the chain gypsy-you may strip the gears.
McMurry Windlass repair info.
Gear parts, bearings, and motor for the McMurry windlass.
The worm gear that fits on the motor shaft is available from Martin Gear in Florida. Any bearing distributor should have access to the gears.
The part number is: WH10
The Wheel gear that fits on the 1” shaft is: w1040D
The bearings 2 for the 1” cross shaft: Link belt number is located on the bearing housing. Rexnord #WF32160
The bearing for the nose of the motor shaft is located on the bearing housing.
Rexnord #F3U210N
The bearings may need to have a small hole drilled in the extended portion of the center support for the shaft bearing to lock the center of the bearing to the shaft.
The motor is a starter from a model 8N ford tractor, new ones are available on EBAY for less than $100.00 delivered.
The starter motor will come with a shaft that is slightly too long and will need to be cut to length and a hole drilled in the proper location to match the existing shaft hole to secure the gear, approx 3/8".
I ordered my gears from Florida Bearings inc. in FT. Lauderdale, FL on line-best price I could find. mailto: ftlsales@floridabearings.com

Note: The ford tractor starters are up only, I believe they can be converted to down also. The old motors can be re-wound though.

re: McMurray Windlass info

Thank you for posting the McMurry windlass info. Here is a bit more.
Up/down motors are available from Western Motor Service, there part number W-8314, phone # 1-800-810-0401. My McMurry is a 12 volt model 2000. The spiral gear on the motor shaft is a Boston Gear GH1066-R, it is attached to the shaft by an 1/8" roller pin.

Re: McMurray Windlass info

I recently had the motor from my McMurry Windlass rebuilt by Acme Electric in Seattle (9015 Aurora Ave N). The work seems well done. They seems to have been the original source of the modified Ford motors for McMurry.

McMurray Windlass dismantle procedure

McMurry Windlass dismantle procedure.

Remove the capstan. Remove the setscrew.Drive the capstan off using a block of wood and hammer. Remove the drift pin.
Loosen the chain gypsy.
Remove top cover and drain oil.
Using electric power rotate windlass such that the ¼” pin in the upper shaft aligns on an angle so that the pin can be driven out without being driven into the worm gear on the lower shaft. Drive out pin. (If your motor won't work and needs to be rebuilt anyway, remove the bolts, pull the stator frame off and turn the rotor by hand.)
Loosen the set screws (1/8” hex wrench) on upper bearings (2 per side).
Remove the chain stripper.
Remove chain gypsy.
Remove upper shaft while supporting the gear. Remove gear.
Loosen set screws (5/64” hex wrench) on motor shaft end bearing (2).
Loosen but do not remove bolts securing the electric motor.
Work motor from windlass housing without separating the motor. The motor is typically seals to the house with RTV silicon.
Remove bolts and motor.
Reassemble in reverse order.

Re: McMurray Windlass info

Hi Steve. Thanks for the offer - I'd love to get the McMurry pdf file from you. I'm new to this forum so don't know the mechanics/etiquette of contacting directly. Need my email? phpaget@dccnet.com
Do you know if alternate gypsy sizes were/are available?
Thanks,
Peter

Re: McMurray Windlass info

Steve, Pls. send the McMurry manual file to Tom Magwire, tjmltd@olypen.com. I had my original motor removed and rebuilt (cracked winding) as well as purchased a spare motor (part MTRW8314). Both motors failed while used this past summer in CND. Gear Oil from the windlass penetrates the motor through the drive shaft. Obviously there is missing seal on the windlass side to prevent oil penetration in the motor. I installed an 1 inch "O" ring and washer on the shaft against the motor without success. Both my original and spare motors experienced oil penetration.

Thanks for your help...I'm sure the manual will have a "blow-up" of all parts on the motor shaft that make up the windlass side...something is missing...wasn't reassembled correctly. My windlass is new purchased in Jan 2005 from Hayner Marine (after Doc Freeman's closed).

Re: McMurray Windlass info

Hi Steve

Would you please send me the McMurry manual if you can. I have an old 32' 1938 launch that I have been restoring for years. Finally made my way to the windlass to find that the gear has a cracked shoulder, and motor is in need of rebuild. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
