Maxwell Nielson Windless Binding under no load

My friend has an old Maxwell Nielsen (1989) We had an issue with it not energizing with the switches. We took it to a shop and had the motor rebuilt. Basically I think all the guy did was clean it up and put brushes in it. We ended up having to do some thing ourselves to it as some of the brush wires were grounding against the case. Now, it runs under no load (bench test) but after a minute or two bogs down. It seems like it is binding but it has already completed a couple of dozen rotations with no problem. We are bench testing with a fully charged 4d battery so I don't think voltage or amperage is the problem. Does anybody have any ideas (or a bigger windless they want to sell)

Can't help you much on your old motor... but also have an old Maxwell-Nilsson windlass. Does the motor bind up standalone, without being mounted in the windlass?

Nilsson does supply and re-produce spare parts for these old windlasses. I bought a new motor from them some years ago, designed to replace the old type motors. If all else is in good working order, a new motor might be a good investment:

I am not sure if it binds while not connected to gearbox. Seems like the motor is actually built in to the gearbox as part of it. I could take all the gears out and see if it runs that way. My concern is that maybe some of the insulation on the armature windings has melted and maybe were getting some cross current or something. I don't even know if that is possible though.

Looks very much like a Lucas (Prince of darkness) M100 long shaft start motor. The front of the motor was modified to screw into the gearbox.

If your winch is reversing (up and down), then the motor was pinned with a spring pin to avoid the motor screwing itself out when letting the chain down.

some instruction are here:

if there is a spring pin, it is likely hidden under the bolt in below picture. Remove it, and a 1/4" punch should remove the spring pin. Then unscrew the motor counterclockwise (normal screw direction) with an oil-filter strap or similar. There is a washer on the far end of the shaft/worm-gear, don't loose it.
