Mantus Versus Fortress...... The Ultimate Lawnmower Test :)

Anchor threads and anchor tests can be a little boring at times for those who are not interested. They can also become a little silly. I think this YouTube poster is serious, but who knows. He is at least very amusing.

The garbage collectors must have hit the jackpot .

Anybody else notice the bent shank on the Mantus?

Re: Mantus Versus Fortress...... The Ultimate Lawnmower Test :)

Worthless so far as relating to the real world. Sort of like testing a wood chisel on aluminum; you will end up measuring the wrong parameters.

  • The setting scope was too short. It is always chain-on -bottom during initial bite.
  • Dry sand is not really related to wet sand. just try to build a sand castle with it. I've done a lot of anchor testing, ad dry beaches are only for pictures, never for testing.
  • He has the Fortress set at 45 degrees, which is totally wrong for sand, specifically hard sand.
And no, the shank is not bent. It is distortion from the wide angle lens.

Re: Mantus Versus Fortress...... The Ultimate Lawnmower Test :)

The first video shows that grounds-keepers around the world are switching to the Mantus, for e-brake failures. I have a Mantus, but now I know that I am going to need a much larger tractor or switch to a plow.
For the the fortress test, SWMBO, took one look and rightly felt that using at least an SUV length of 1/2 inch chain may have made all the difference.
Great posts and thanks for the laughs.

What is the yellow Q-flag for in the video? Shouldn't it be an ISIS flag?

My question to Mantus - when your anchors can pack into such a small lunch box, why does it have to cost so much to post one to me in NZ??? (Nobody sells them here. )

The take home is that, if ISIS starts using lawnmowers, the best way to stop them is with a Mantus. Has anybody CC'ed the president?

I think he should have put the old anchor in the recycle bin. Save the planet, one anchor at a time........

I may need to acquire one the next time my tractor tries to get away. Actually, the Mantus may be fine (I do not own one), but the video proves nothing useful for most of us, at least in my opinion.

Re: Mantus Versus Fortress...... The Ultimate Lawnmower Test :)

I would be sold on the Mantus if they will make one that would store flat like the Fortress. The only reason the Fortress didnt set is because its shank angle is not fixed, so its like apples and oranges. I use a Fortress as a stern anchor since I must have an anchor that stores flat against the stern rail. I do think there was a good point made in the vid although it was also humorous.

Anyway my Fortress used as stern anchor has never failed to set in sand on first try.

Re: Mantus Versus Fortress...... The Ultimate Lawnmower Test :)

As Thinwater mentioned, the Fortress was erroneously set at the 45 degree angle for soft mud. We put two warning labels over the holes in the Crown, where the shank fluke angle adjustment is made, which state "soft mud only," and he ignored them.

He also didn't install the Mud Palms, which lift the back end of the anchor up so that the Flukes take a more aggressive angle into the sea bottom. He ignored our advice in the assembly instructions to permanently install them as well.

I might find this video to be humorous as well, except for the fact that there are those who might believe it's legitimate.

Anyone who has ever used a Fortress knows this little vid is BS. I've never had mine pull or drag in sand or mud on W/Cent FL coast. Fantastic holding!

However, with you as a vendor, I see your concerns and share them as well. I would hate it that someone new to boating and trying to make a decision would form the wrong opinion and possibly pass on the best anchor available for their situation.
