Manson Supreme, has the design changed?
Hi,
Just changed boat and have changed anchor to a Manson 20kg. I had an early one of these on my previous boat and the setting performance was really good, the new one has a slightly changed tip and is not nearly as sharp, the setting performance does not seem as good ( only used it a couple of times so it might just be me )The anchor was supplied by a large chandler with a chain of shops so I'm pretty sure it's not a copy. Any similar experiences out there?

Re: Manson Supreme, has the design changed?
Interesting. There is no design change that I know of.
A sharper tip will significantly increase the performance of an anchor. However, there is a trade off. The thinner tips bend more easily and the galvanising wears off quicker.
Bent anchor tips are more common in my experience than shanks. I have seen quite a few. For some strange reason forums seem to endless discussion about anchor shank strength, but nothing about anchor tip strength
Overall I think it is better to have improved anchor performance and put up with the small risk of bending the anchor tip, but this can be taken too far.
Here are some photos I took of a typical Manson Supreme tip. You might be able to compare this to your current anchor:
This one is bent obviously. I took the photo in about 2008 so given the rust this must have been an early model.
Any anchor can bend. I have not personally seen another Manson Supreme with a bent tip so I suspect it is not a common problem with this model.
Perhaps you could post a photo of your anchor?

I have had my 60lb Manson Supreme for 5 years.
This anchor will not set in compacted sand or weed.
I watched it dragging on compacted sand, the anchor is just sliding on its side making contact with the sand on the buegel and on the arrow shape 2.5 in from the tip. The tip is not even touching the sand!
Not keen on spending $600 on a replacement.
I'm thinking about cutting that arrow part on both sides off, see attached pic.
In theory this should improve the chance of the anchor to set?
Any thought from a qualified person/ sailor?

Fascinated by his use of underwater video....

Re: Manson Supreme, has the design changed?
My modified “Manson Supreme” now setting in compacted sand as well. As you can see, the tip of the modified anchor now touch the ground when sliding on the side.

Re: Manson Supreme, has the design changed?
Have my Manson Supreme for 7 years now, the last 2 years time full time cruising. In that time it has only failed to set right off twice, both times at the same spot (10 days apart).
I don't believe the anchor to have a "hard to set" in anything.
But who knows

It is not hard to see that it is a bad design. Just look at it. Its not rocket science.

I have used the anchor for 5 years, 30 000nm, full time live aboard, no marinas.

Re: Manson Supreme, has the design changed?
Look at what???
I couldn’t care less how people want cut and chop up thief anchors. All I care is that my anchor performs well, mine has been excellent, and that other people’s anchor work enough that they don’t drag into me.

Re: Manson Supreme, has the design changed?
Great video and good feedback, will be modifying my OfferUp score. I picked up a Manson 14 lbs I believe which I plan to put on my 17 Whaler Montauk and I expect it to be a perfect anchor. Will try to post up before and after pic of the mod.

Just out of curiosity have you considered contacting Manson direct and having a chat with them. I would be surprised if they would not be able to assist.

I know this is an old thread but Scoop anchors, always going to be problematic in my view.

Re: Manson Supreme, has the design changed?
I have been using my Manson Supreme for 4 years now. Liveaboard, on the hook most of the time. I have had problems in setting it in weeds. And once hooked a coral head in the scoop which broke off during a changing wind event - not a pleasant night:
